Funding Options for the Pike School/Lesley University School-based Internship/M.Ed. Program

Much has been written about the impending crisis for new and highly qualified teachers to enter the profession. Experts predict that The United States will need over 2 million new teachers in the next 10 years. For example, a small state like Massachusetts is predicting that more than 50% of K-12 classrooms will need new teachers, requiring at least 35, 000 educators to fill these vacancies. Larger states such as California will need to hire 25,000 new K-12 teachers per year to meets its needs.

In response to the nation’s need to train and retain highly qualified teachers, four years ago The Pike School Board of Trustees approved the establishment of The Pike Intern Scholars Program.  Through this innovative program, Pike will offer two qualified candidates $10,000 each in merit based grants to help defray the cost of the Lesley/Pike tuition for the 2010-2011 academic year. These grants will be specifically awarded to men and people of color who exhibited strong academic achievement during their undergraduate years and who showed a commitment to making a difference in the lives of elementary school children. These grants are in addition to long-standing need based scholarships available to all candidates who qualify.

Pike understands that the level of preparation needed for success in one’s own classroom takes time, practice and support at many levels. Pike will continue to fund new initiatives in an effort to make a difference in the lives of children.
